EEX publishes 2021 Auction Calendar for Emission Allowances (EUA) and Aviation Allowances (EUAA)

    Poland extends contract with EEX on the auctioning of Emission Allowances

    The European Energy Exchange (EEX) has published the 2021 calendar for the auctioning of EU Emission Allowances (EUA) and EU Aviation Allowances (EUAA) in coordination with the European Commission, the EU Member States and the EEA EFTA states auctioning on the common auction platform (CAP3) as well as with the competent German and Polish authorities.

    Furthermore, the EEX contract on the auctioning of emission allowances on behalf of the Polish government has been extended on 10th December 2020 for up to five years.

    The 2021 emission auctions will start with the German EUA auction on 29th January 2021.

    Auctions of EU Emission Allowances (EUA)

    EU auctions

    EEX will hold EUA auctions in the framework of the common EU auction platform (CAP3) on behalf of 25 EU member states, the EEA EFTA states and two funds. The 2021 auctions will include a volume of 40 million allowances for the Innovation Fund and 69.4 million allowances for the Modernisation Fund. The EU auctions are scheduled to take place as usual on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays during the period from 1 February to 20th December 2021.

    Auctions for Germany

    EEX will conduct weekly EUA auctions on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany on Fridays, starting on 29th January 2021 until 17th December 2021.

    Auctions for Poland

    Auctions on behalf of Poland will take place in 2021 in a weekly rhythm every Wednesday, starting on 3rd February until 15th December 2021.

    The bidding window for all EUA auctions conducted by EEX will be open from 9.00 to 11.00 am CET. The below table provides an overview of the auction volumes:

    Auctions of EU Aviation Allowances (EUAA)

    EU auctions

    In its capacity as the common auction platform appointed by 25 Member States and the EEA EFTA states, EEX will conduct five auctions of EU Aviation Allowances (EUAA) in 2021 in a bi-monthly rhythm, starting from 17th March 2021:

    17th March:          614,500 EUAAs

    12th May:              614,500 EUAAs

    7th July:                614,500 EUAAs

    15th September: 614,500 EUAAs

    10th November:    613,500 EUAAs     

    German and Polish EUAA auction

    EEX will conduct one EUAA auction on behalf of Germany on Wednesday, 13th October 2021, with a volume of 600,000 EUAAs.

    EEX will also conduct one EUAA auction on behalf of Poland on Wednesday, 14th April 2021, with a volume of 114,000 EUAAs.

    The bidding window for all EUAA auctions on EEX will be open from 1.00 to 3.00 pm CET.

    Clearing and settlement of all emission allowances is conducted by European Commodity Clearing (ECC).
