EEX Press Release – EEX selected to host EU common auction platform for emission allowances for a further five years

The European Energy Exchange (EEX) has been re-appointed by the European Commission as the common auction platform (CAP) for EU ETS emission allowances, following the successful participation in the tender process.

The European Commission has signed a contract with EEX and its clearing house European Commodity Clearing (ECC) for running Europe-wide primary market emissions auctions for another period of up to five years. The auctions will be held on behalf of 25 EU Member States, three EEA EFTA states as well as for the Innovation Fund (https://ec.europa.eu/clima/policies/innovation-fund_en) and the Modernisation Fund (https://ec.europa.eu/clima/policies/budget/modernisation-fund_en).

Commenting on the re-appointment, Peter Reitz, Chief Executive Officer of EEX said; “We look forward to continuing our services and the successful cooperation with the European Commission and the participating Member States and the EEA EFTA States.” He adds; “As we approach the fourth EU ETS trading period it is even more important to further reduce CO2 emissions. Auctions are a key instrument to reach climate targets and it is essential for us to be part of this journey and contribute secure and reliable auctions to the market.”

The last auction under the current CAP contract is scheduled for Monday, 14th December 2020. The volumes of general and aviation allowances to be auctioned in 2020, including the allowances to be auctioned separately for Germany and Poland, remain unchanged.

Auctions under the new CAP contract will start in 2021. The information on the publication of the 2021 auction calendars will follow in due time. EEX has been running the regular auctions on behalf of the participating Member States since 2012 and has collected more than 47 bn € for the Member States participating in the CAP auctions.
