EEX Press Release - Three more years: EEX remains German auction platform for emission allowances in the EU ETS

The European Energy Exchange (EEX) won the tender by the German Environment Agency for the auctioning of emission allowances on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Starting in January 2024 for a period of three years, EEX will continue to conduct the weekly auctions on behalf of Germany within the framework of the EU emissions trading system (EU ETS). Thereafter, there is the option for a further extension of two years.

Peter Reitz, CEO of EEX, comments: “The auctions are and will remain an important instrument for the allocation of emission allowances to the market and for generating funds to fight climate change. The renewed award confirms EEX’s role as the leading primary market platform for emission allowances in Europe and an important reference for the entire market.”

The current contract ends at the beginning of January 2024. Before the start of the auctions under the new mandate, EEX must be included or confirmed in the Annex of the EU Auctioning Regulation. This is an obligation under the Auctioining Regulation.

Since January 2010, more than 1.5 billion emission allowances have been auctioned at EEX on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany and total revenues of over 26.2 billion euros have been achieved. These funds were used almost entirely to finance national and international climate protection measures.

In addition, EEX carries out the auctions of emission allowances on behalf of the European Commission and 25 participating EU member states as well as for Poland and Northern Ireland. EEX is the only exchange platform authorised to conduct primary market auctions for European emission allowances. In 2021, EEX auctioned a total of around 587 million emission allowances via the exchange’s spot market.

Clearing and settlement of the emission allowances is conducted by European Commodity Clearing (ECC). EEX provides all auction dates and further information in the auction calendar which is available here.
