EEX Press Release - EEX Group announces winners of the Excellence Awards 2018

    At yesterday’s autumn reception in Brussels, EEX Group honored the 2018 winners of the EEX Group "Excellence Award". The reception was held under the motto "From the Energy Union to the Climate Union". As a guest speaker, EEX Group welcomed Saïd El-Khadraoui, a former Member of the European Parliament and adviser to the European Policy Strategy Centre.

    For the eighth consecutive year, the Excellence Award honours outstanding academic theses. The awards were presented to:

    • Maximilian Borning for his Master’s thesis at RWTH Aachen University, “Evaluation of flexibility options using stochastic electricity market simulations”.
    • Abdul Kader Khalil for his Master’s thesis at Brandenburg Technical University, “Development of an extended wind turbine model and implementation proposal for the application in the dispatcher training system”.
    •  Martin Kristiansen for his research work at Norwegian University of Science and Technology, “A Mechanism for Allocating Benefits and Costs from Transmission Interconnections under Cooperation: A Case Study of the North Sea Offshore Grid”.
    • David Matthäus for his research work at the Technical University of Munich, “Auctions of Renewable Energy Support - A Real Options Approach”.
    • Hans Schermeyer for his research work at the Karlsruher Institute for Technology, “Network congestion management in regenerative energy systems - Investigations on the curtailment of renewable energies and sector coupling in a German distribution network”.

    EEX Chief Strategy Officer Dr Tobias Paulun who presented the awards comments: “The award entries demonstrate that students are increasingly dealing with renewable energies and their integration into the market – a topic which is also of huge interest for us as an energy exchange
    operator. We’re proud to support innovative and creative ideas for the future with these awards while, at the same time, facilitate the development of energy and commodity trading in a sustainable way”.

    Through the Excellence Award programme, EEX Group honors academic studies and theses which deal with current political, regulatory, technical and economic issues in the fields of energy and agricultural products as well as exchange trading of these products. In addition, sustainability aspects
    can also be addressed. The applications for the 2019 EEX Excellence Award can be submitted until 31th October 2019.
