Leipzig/Paris, 22 October 2024 – The European Energy Exchange (EEX) will start quarterly auctions for biogas Guarantees of Origin (GOs) on behalf of the French Ministry of Energy on 4 December, 2024. At the auctions, the French State sells GOs produced by selected biogas facilities benefiting from a state support mechanism.
EEX already provides registry services for biogas GOs in France since October 2023 and has been operating a similar auction mechanism for French power GOs since 2019.
Peter Reitz, CEO of EEX, comments: “It is an exciting time for us to launch one of the first cleared European biogas GOs auctions. Reliable GOs mechanisms are essential for the success of the energy transition and decarbonisation efforts, and biogas is growing in importance as an energy source. We are proud to be closely working with the French Ministry of Energy on such an important matter again.”
Guarantees of Origin schemes and registry services play an essential role in increasing renewables integration by ensuring transparency and bringing trust to the markets. GOs enable the tracking of origins of renewable energy within the EU, including electricity, biogas, or hydrogen. In addition, registries provide a standardised, transparent and efficient energy certification scheme, in line with European legislation, that companies can use in their decarbonisation efforts.
Related clearing services will be provided by the European Commodity Clearing (ECC).
