EEX Group - Record year 2018

In 2018, EEX Group strengthened its position for emissions trading world-wide. The exchanges have surpassed trading volumes of the previous year by more than 110%. Another exciting milestone was the introduction of North American environmental products on our US-based subsidiary Nodal Exchange. This is the first step of EEX Group in emission markets outside of Europe.

Upcoming: Launch of additional EUA option expiries

In line with market demand, EEX will launch new monthly and quarterly EUA option expiries this June. The existing Dec options will be enhanced by three monthly and twelve quarterly options which will be offered on a rolling basis. Each monthly and quarterly option will be listed on the underlying of the December futures contract of the same calendar year.

EEX's option volumes on EUAs totalled 1.03 million contracts in 2018, a massive increase from just 750 contracts traded in 2017. At the same time the total listed EUA options market has increased significantly. Through Q1 this year, more than 800,000 listed EUA option contracts have been transacted across all exchanges. These new EEX contracts reflect the trend of the broader use of options within the global derivatives markets.

Auction Calendar: additional auctioneers and volumes

In its role as the auction platform for the 25 EU member states as well as for Germany and Poland,  EEX is delighted to welcome three additional states on the sell side of the auctions. As of 3 June 2019, EEX will conduct auctions on behalf of the EEA EFTA countries Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. To date, these countries could not auction any allowances foreseen for the years 2013 to 2019 due to missing legal frameworks with the European Commission.

EEX reconfirms its support for the development of national ETS in China

In March, EEX engaged with Shanghai Environment and Energy Exchange (CNEEEX) over a 3-day workshop organised by the German government agency GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit). The workshop was aimed at supporting the construction of the national carbon trading platform in China, which will gradually start its operation by 2020. EEX experts shared their experiences in different aspects, most notably market operations and market surveillance, and discussed with CNEEEX staff the challenges faced for the Chinese national ETS.

For EEX, such activities are a strategic imperative: EEX has been a pioneer and supporter for the use of carbon pricing and is determined to show a long-term commitment to new carbon markets beyond Europe. This corresponds to EEX’s overall ambition to serve as a gateway to global carbon markets and become a trusted service provider for trading participants and governments alike.

Guest Contribution: A "big year" for carbon markets in Europe and worldwide

In our Annual Report 2018 which was recently published, Dirk Forrister from IETA contributed an article about the development of worldwide carbon markets. According to Bloomberg, European carbon allowances were the fastest growing commodity market of 2018. Driven by the adoption of a reform package of strengthening measures, the market responded with a tripling of prices and quadrupling of market value. It was a “big year” for Europe’s carbon markets. Was 2018 an anomaly, or was it a sign of bigger things yet to come? Carbon market analysts offer a range of views – but one thing is for sure: This market now has the world’s attention again.
