EEX trading results and new admissions in December

Electricity trading volume on the European Energy Exchange (EEX) in December 2007 totalled 60.9 TWh, compared with 63.1 TWh in December 2006.

This includes 11,765,275 MWh (December 2006: 7,950,177 MWh) traded on the electricity Spot Market, where the average base load price (Phelix Base Month) for the month was 51.68 Euro/MWh and the peak load price (Phelix Peak Month) 81.92 Euro/MWh.

Intraday volume in December 2007 was 154,308 MWh. On the Swiss electricity Spot Market December volume was 462,000 MWh.

Trading volume in electricity derivatives in December 2007 totalled 49.1 TWh (December 2006: 55.1 TWh). This includes 39.9 TWh from OTC clearing. The Open Interest at 28 December 2007 was 270.7 TWh.

The 2008 base load price for German electricity was fixed at 61.25 Euro/MWh on 21 December 2007 and the 2008 peak load price at 83.91 Euro/MWh.

A total of 94,001 EU Allowances (EUA) were traded on the Spot Market in December, compared with 1,051,299 EUAs in December 2006. During the month, the Carbix (Carbon Index) ranged between 0.01 Euro/EUA and 0.04 Euro/EUA.

Volume on the EEX Derivatives Market was 1,386,000 EUAs (72,000 EUAs December 2006). The 2008 contract was fixed at 22.23 Euro/EUA on 28 December 2007, and the 2009 contract at 22.77 Euro/EUA.

In July, EEX launched natural gas trading. In December, the total Spot Market volume (BEB and E.ON GT market areas) was 98,160 MWh. The Spot Market price for the delivery of natural gas ranged between 20.07 Euro/MWh and 26.30 Euro/MWh.

Volumes on the Derivatives Market (BEB and E.ON GT market areas) amounted to 394,010 MWh. On 28 December 2007, the open interest was 919,450 MWh.

On 21 December 2007 natural gas prices for delivery in 2008 were fixed at 23.92 Euro/MWh (BEB) and 24.79 Euro/MWh (E.ON GT), respectively.

EEX currently has 191 member companies from 20 countries. Polenergia Trading S.A., Warsaw and RWE Transportnetz Strom GmbH, Dortmund, were admitted to the EEX Spot Market in December. SJB Energy Trading B.V., Brielle/The Netherlands and KfW Bankengruppe, Frankfurt/Main were admitted to the EEX Derivatives Market. Within the EEX/Eurex cooperation in emissions trading the following companies were admitted to the EEX Derivatives Market: Bayerische Hypo- und Vereinsbank AG, Munich, G.H. Financials Ltd., London, HSBC Bank plc, London, Saxon Financials Ltd., London, Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken AB plc, London, Susquehanna International Securities Ltd., Dublin and TFS Derivatives Ltd., London. In addition another company from the United States was admitted to the EEX Derivatives Market within the cooperation.
